Beautiful, wonderful, amazing… You should see this. “The Ridge” is a brand new film by Scottish trials cyclist Danny MacAskill. For the first time in one of his films, Danny climbs aboard a mountain bike and returns to his native home of the Isle of Skye in Scotland to take on a death-defying ride along the notorious Cuillin Ridgeline.

I recommend you to watch the video in High Definition and full screen.

Danny MacAskill and “The Ridge”

Daniel “Danny” MacAskill (born December 23, 1985) is a Scottish trials cyclist, from Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye. He works professionally as a street trials and (as of 2021) mountain bike rider for Santa Cruz Bicycles.

The Ridge was released in October 2014 by MacAskill and long-term collaborator Stu Thomson of Cut Media. It was filmed on MacAskill’s home island, the Isle of Skye, the largest and northernmost of the major islands in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, along the steep and rocky Cuillin Ridge.

In the first 5 days, the video on YouTube garnered over 10 million views. The film was accompanied by a BBC Scotland programme Riding the Ridge that documented Danny and the Cut Media crew as they created the viral film.

Behind the scenes

You can read this blog post to learn more about how this amazing film created. In a nutshell, the team had to hike a minimum of 900 meters (of elevations) most days, and generally 2-4 hours hiking (plus the same in return so 4-8 hours of slogging each day).
