Between 1946 and 1951, the Giro d’Italia had a special jersey, “maglia nera” (English: black jersey), for the last-placed rider. There was a real competition between many riders, to win this highly-coveted jersey. The last-placed rider would rode the final victory lap with the race winner each year around the historic Vigorelli Velodrome in Milan. The last winner of the black jersey was Giovanni Pinarello, founder of the prestigious Pinarello bikes, which went on to equip several winners of the vastly more coveted maglia rosa (race winner’s pink jersey). And, Pinarello is also the winningest bicycle in the Tour de France (13, as of 2017). Now, for the second consecutive year, the Black Jersey is back at Giro d’Italia Under 23, a tribute to Giovanni Pinarello.

Today’s historic photo of the day: 20 years ago today, on September 2, 1994, Miguel Indurain broke the Hour Record at Velodrome du Lac, Bordeaux. While breaking the record, Indurain covered 53.040 km in an hour. The previous record was Graeme Obree’s 52.713 km, achieved in April 24, 1994, at the same place.

Pinarello has revealed its 2015 bike models. The admiral ship of the collection is Pinarello Dogma F8. This year, in Tour de France, UCI Pro Team Sky Procycling and its leader Chris Froome (last years’ winner) will use the brand new Dogma F8. It is said to be lighter, stiffer and more aero than before. It has been approved by the UCI and will debut at the Critérium du Dauphiné 2014 which begins in Lyon on 8 June.

Last september, Rui Costa of Portugal became the new UCI World Champion. Costa was the member of the Spanish Movistar team, so he was riding a Pinarello Dogma 65.1 Think2 (he moved to Lampre-Merida for 2014 season).
To celebrate their victory in the UCI Worlds 2013, Pinarello produced a special frame: “The World Champion’s frame”. They shared only one photo on their facebook page.

Pinarello was the most successful bike supplier of the pro-peloton at the Tour de France 2013. Chris Froome of Team Sky won the yellow jersey, and Nairo Quintana of Movistar team won both polka dot jersey of the KOM (King of the mountains) and white jersey of “the best young rider” classifications on Pinarello Dogma bikes. Pinarello also produced a special edition to honor the polka dot jersey.
