Today’s historic photo of the day: Roy Schuiten of Scic-Bottecchia team is time trialing at 14th stage of the 1978 Giro d’Italia in Venezia (Venice), near “Canal Grande” – The Grand Canal. May 21, 1978.

The Venice Time-Trial of stage 14 required the construction of a floating bridge over the Grand Canal so that the riders could cross the “Canal Grande” and finish in San Marco Square. The length of the course was 12 km (7 mi).

Francesco Moser won the stage. Johan de Muynck won the 1978 Giro d’Italia.

Roy Schuiten (16 December 1950 – 19 September 2006) was a Dutch track and road racing cyclist. He was twice World Individual Pursuit Champion (1974, 1975). On the road, he won the Grand Prix des Nations twice, in 1974 and 1975, and Rund um den Henninger Turm (Eschborn-Frankfurt City Loop) in 1975.

After retirement in 1982, he became manager of PDM-Concorde in 1986 for a year. He then moved to Portugal and started his own restaurant. He died on 19 September 2006 in Praia de Carvoeiro, aged 55, from a stomach hemorrhage.
