Le Bourg-d’Oisans is a commune in the Isère department in southeastern France. It is located in the Oisans region of the French Alps.

The commune is surrounded by several well-known mountain resorts, including the Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes. The Écrins National Park lies to the southeast of Le Bourg-d’Oisans.

Natural heritage

  • Lauvitel lake: integral reserve of the Ecrins national park: unique in France, this reserve established in the town of Bourg-d’Oisans and created in 1995, is a space withdrawn from daily human activity. This “super” nature reserve is used to study nature outside of direct human intervention. Only scientific work takes place there. Its goal is to be a reference territory comparable to similar environments supporting pastoral, forestry, or tourist activities.

Col du Glandon

Col du Glandon (el. 1924 m.) is a high mountain pass in the Dauphiné Alps in Savoie, France, linking Le Bourg-d’Oisans to La Chambre. It is situated between the Belledonne, Grandes Rousses and Arvan-Villards mountain ranges, west of the Col de la Croix de Fer. The road over the Col du Glandon was opened in 1898, although it was not linked to the Col de la Croix de Fer until 1912.

The pass is only open from June to October. It is sometimes used by the Tour de France in July. The last appearance was in 2012 edition, Stage 11.

Col de la Madeleine (el. 1,993 m.) is a high mountain pass in the Alps in the department of Savoie in France which connects La Chambre in Maurienne with Aigueblanche and Feissons-sur-Isère in Tarentaise. The pass is closed from November to the beginning of June. It has been described as “beautiful, but heartbreaking”.The pass was first included in the Tour de France in 1969 and has since featured 24 times, most recently on Stage 11 of the 2012 race when it was approached from the direction of Feissons-sur-Isère.

It has been ranked hors catégorie, every year since 1995.
