Vuelta a España 2014 Stage 2 start city, Algeciras is a port city in the south of Spain and is the largest city on the Bay of Gibraltar (in Spanish, the Bahía de Algeciras). The Port of Algeciras is one of the largest ports in Europe and in the world in three categories: container, cargo, and transshipment. It is situated 20 km north-east of Tarifa on the Río de la Miel, which is the southernmost river of the Iberian peninsula and continental Europe.

Algeciras is fast becoming a fundamental destination in nature and experience-oriented tourism. It is considered by ornithologists as the third best place in the world to observe migratory birds. Dolphins and whales can also be seen with the help of the sighting boats that operate in the Strait.

Algeciras’ fabulous beaches and natural trails satisfy those visitors in search of tranquillity who appreciate the environment. However, it should not be forgotten that the local gastronomy is also one of its main attractions: fried fish, sea nettle, sea urchins… will delight the taste buds of even the most demanding foodies. The traditional tapas are of extraordinary quality and only the freshest products are used, almost always from the fresh food market: a multicultural experience for the senses.

One novelty is the recently inaugurated Paco de Lucía Route, a tour of all the places most connected to the life and work of the guitar genius and Algeciras native. All of this because Algeciras has a unique location, between two bodies of water, opposite the mountains of Morocco, just 14 kilometers away by the sea, and between the Costa de la Luz and the Costa del Sol. Algeciras is a destination full of history that is already making a name for itself.

Vuelta a España 2014 Stage 2 finish town, San Fernando (Saint-Ferdinand in English) is a town in the province of Cádiz, Spain. The city also uses the name “La Isla” (The Island), however, the city is no longer an island, but a peninsula, as it has been connected to the mainland. The people from San Fernando are locally known as “Cañaíllas” or “Isleños”.

The Island, as San Fernando is often referred to, is located in the heart of the Bay of Cadiz and is a dream destination for visitors due to its wonderful climate, its privileged location right by the sea, surrounded by a Natural Park and the warm, open and friendly character of its people.

When walking along its streets, plazas and boulevards, San Fernando can be seen as a true forest of white battlements, standing haughty and capricious, grilled balconies and viewpoints, multiform ledges and alcoves in what is a very personal and unique interpretation of living lime and stone. All of this gives the city a truly unique image.

Trails that wind through places of extraordinary beauty, a beautiful five-kilometer fine golden sandy beach on the Atlantic coast; streets, plazas and parks where the sun always shines and cozy corners where you can listen to some great flamenco while sampling the delicious gastronomy all make San Fernando a unique year-round holiday destination.
