What a stage it was! Andrew Talansky of Garmin Sharp surprisingly won the 2014 Critérium du Dauphiné, after being in a successful breakaway group in the last stage (stage 8). Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) finished second in the general classification. Former race leader Chris Froome started the stage in second place to Contador in the GC, and finished out of the top ten! Mikel Nieve Iturralde (Team Sky) won the stage.

Stage 8 of the 2014 Critérium du Dauphiné was a 131.5-kilometer mountainous stage from Megève to Courchevel. It was a short one, but it promised to be explosive. There were four climbs – the category 2 Côte de Domancy, and the trio of category 1 climbs of the Col des Saisies (13.4km at 5.2%), Côte de Montagny (8km at 6.5%) and the final haul to Courchevel Le Praz (5.9km at 6.2%).

At the head of the overall standings, the margins were tight, with just eight seconds were separating yellow jersey Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) from Chris Froome (Team Sky).

A 23-man group broke away, there were a number of danger men in this breakaway move. Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp, 3rd, just at 39 sec) Jurgen Van Den Broeck (Lotto Belisol, 5th at 1:14), Romain Bardet (7th at 2:11), and Adam Yates (10th at 2:52) were all in there. Interestingly, Team Sky put its 3 strong men in the break.

The 23 riders in the break were: David López García, Mikel Nieve and Richie Porte (Sky), Tanel Kangert and Lieuwe Westra (Astana), Dani Navarro and Yoann Bagot (Cofidis), Adam Yates (Orica GreenEdge), Igor Anton, John Gadret (Movistar), Romain Bardet, Alexis Gougeard, Jean-Christoph Péraud (Ag2r-La Mondiale), Thomas Voeckler (Europcar), Jurgen Van den Broeck, Tony Gallopin, Pim Ligthart (Lotto Belisol), Kristjan Koren (Cannondale), Tejay van Garderen (BMC), Yuriy Trofimov (Katusha), Ryder Hesjedal, Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) and Bartosz Huzarski (NetApp-Endura).

2014 Critérium du Dauphiné stage 8 – Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) leading the break

With 86 km to go, Chris Froome attacked from the peloton on the Col des Saisies, in the company of teammates Geraint Thomas, Danny Pate, and Vasil Kiryienka. The yellow jersey Contador followed but he did not have any teammates left with him. Shortly after that, the Froome/Contador group has swollen to 17 riders, but the yellow jersey remained completely isolated in a group with three Sky riders, three Astana riders (including Vincenzo Nibali), and Wilco Kelderman (Belkin).

The riders in the yellow jersey group were: Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo), Chris Froome, Vasil Kiryienka, Danny Pate, Geraint Thomas (Sky), Vincenzo Nibali, Jakob Fuglsang (Astana), Luis Maté (Cofidis), Mikaël Chérel, Ben Gastauer (Ag2r-La Mondiale), Sébastien Reichenbach (IAM), Darwin Atapuma (BMC), Dani Moreno (Katusha), Jan Bakelants (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), Wilco Kelderman, Martijn Keizer (Belkin) and Leo König (NetApp-Endura).

Meanwhile, Richie Porte (Sky) and Lieuwe Westra (Astana) have sat up from the break on the Col des Saisies and started waiting for the Froome/Contador/Nibali group behind.

In the long valley between the Saisies and the Côte de Montagny, the gap between the leaders and the Froome-Contador group has dropped to 1:55. Belkin’s Martijn Keizer was now contributing to the chase, but the Talansky group were still outnumbered the Froome-Contador group.

Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Sharp) surged to the front in a bid to inject a bit more urgency into the break’s efforts. The Canadian has put in a huge shift in support of Talansky. Meanwhile, Richie Porte was riding on the front of the Froome-Contador group, and the gap was over a minute with just over ten kilometer to go to the foot of the Côte de Montagny, the beginning of the two-part climb to the finish.

Just after Porte slipped back, Geraint Thomas and Froome went on the attack, but Contador followed them immediately. Froome looked for Contador to take a turn on the front, but the Spaniard ignored the request. When Froome and Contador slowed down, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) took a flyer and opened a small gap. The stop-start pace in the yellow jersey group has allowed the Talansky group to extend its lead once again. The gap was back up to 1:20.

Contador was unhappy. The yellow jersey of the 2014 Critérium du Dauphiné was slipping away. With 23 km to go, he attacked alone on the lower slopes of the Côte de Montagny and immediately opened a large gap over Froome group. With Contador’s attack, the yellow jersey group has fragmented completely, and Froome has shown no sign of being able to follow Contador. The Briton was sitting on the wheel of Geraint Thomas and Richie Porte and was losing ground on Contador and the leaders.

With 19 km to go, the gap between Talansky and Contador was 1:32.

With 18 km to go, as the leaders were approaching the top of the Côte de Montagny, the situation was: Talansky, Bardet, Van Den Broeck, Nieve, Yates, Van Garderen, Gadret, and Navarro were out in front; Kelderman and Nibali were 48 seconds down; Contador was 1:26 behind and a struggling Froome was 2:25 behind.

With 16 km to go, Contador crossed the summit of the Côte de Montagny 1:16 down on the Talansky group and he was almost within sight of Nibali.

15 km to go: Talansky, Van Den Broeck, and Bardet were 45 seconds up on Nibali and Kelderman, 1:16 up on Contador, and 2:42 ahead of the Froome group.

In the following kilometers, Contador managed to close the gap up to 54 sec, but couldn’t make any further inroads into the break’s lead. It was going to come down to one, final time trial for the Spaniard, who had must recoup a little over half a minute on Talanksy on the final climb to save his yellow jersey.

Talansky led the break onto the final climb. Nibali and Kelderman were just 20 seconds back, while Contador was still 1:20 behind. Froome, meanwhile, has slipped to 4:20 in what has turned into a jour sans in every sense for the 2013 Tour de France winner.

With 3.3 km to go, Mikel Nieve of Team Sky decided not to wait for Froome anymore, attacked from the break in a bid to salvage a stage victory. He was no threat on GC, and Talansky, Van Den Broeck, and Bardet didn’t follow him.

2014 Critérium du Dauphiné stage 8 – Mikel Nieve (Team Sky) attacks from the breakaway group

With 2.3 km to go, Contador caught Nibali but was still 58 seconds down on Talansky.

The leading group has fragmented in the final kilometer and Talansky was struggling now. Van Garderen, Van Den Broeck, Bardet, Yates all past him. The American now wouldn’t take any bonus seconds.

Mikel Nieve won the stage. Talansky crossed the line 9 seconds down in fourth place. Contador crossed the line 1:15 down to Nieve (1:06 down to Talansky). Talansky burst into tears on learning the news. He won the Critérium du Dauphiné 2014 by 27 seconds.

Froome crossed the line with teammate David Lopez in 20th place overall, 5:05 down on Nieve. The Briton finished this years’ Critérium du Dauphiné in 12th place overall, having been dealt a considerable blow by Contador ahead of the Tour de France.

Conclusion: Contador lost the yellow jersey, but won the moral battle over Froome while we’re heading into the Tour de France.
