Jens Voigt, the 41-year-old (nearly 42) German rider of RadioShack-Leopard won Amgen Tour of California 2013 Stage 5, after a solo attack just over five kilometers from the finish of the stage to Avila Beach. Yesterdays’ winner Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Sharp) won the sprint in the main bunch and finished in second. Thor Hushovd (BMC Racing Team) completed the stage podium. Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing Team) took the general classification lead.

The evergreen Jens Voigt of RadioShack-Leopard won Amgen Tour of California 2013 Stage 5, after a solo attack just over five kilometers from the finish of the stage to Avila Beach.

The evergreen Jens Voigt had been part of an 18-rider lead group containing the majority of the race’s main protagonists after strong crosswinds had split the peloton. The German launched one of his trademarks late attacks within the final five kilometers and built up enough gap to stay away.

At the press conference after the stage, Jens Voigt said:

“We (RadioShack-Leopard) had our most important guy, Matthew Busche in the move, with myself and Irizar to push the break,” said Voigt.”

“Busche said to me ‘you look pretty good, why don’t you go for the stage’. I just did the same move I’ve been doing since the ice age, and I couldn’t believe they let me go.”

“Once I get 20 seconds, I’m gone. I looked back and said, ‘I can’t believe they’re giving me 20 seconds, don’t they know?’ I actually had time to slow down and it was good, because I was, well not close to passing out, but it was hard. I had to dig really deep, but now all the pain is behind me.”

In this monster episode of Backstage Pass, the ORICA-GreenEDGE fight hard in strong winds throughout the 5th stage from Santa Barbara to Avila Beach. After getting into the front group of 18, ORICA-GreenEDGE riders Cameron Meyer moves up into 6th place on GC and Michael Matthews finishes 5th on the stage.
