E-bikes make transportation significantly easier and quicker, particularly in bustling cities.
However, finding a high-quality electric bicycle at a reasonable price can be a challenge.
To help you, we’ll provide some tips on securing the best deal that balances price with quality!
BATTERY IS KEY
Battery capacity is crucial, especially for long rides, delivery jobs, or if you’re using a high-powered e-bike.
For delivery purposes, aim for a minimum of 48v20ah (1000Wh) for part-time work, or 48v50ah (2400Wh) for full-time use.
If you’re just using the e-bike casually, 48v10-15ah should suffice.
On the flip side, if you have a powerful motor like 1000W+, you’ll need an expensive, robust battery. Cheaper batteries won’t handle high power well and will underperform in range.
CHINESE VS BRANDED CELLS
Chinese battery cells typically last 3-4 times less than reputable brands such as Samsung, LG, or Panasonic. Chinese batteries usually last 1-3 years, and after around 800 recharges, their capacity dips below 60%.
In contrast, branded cells can last 3-5+ years without issues. After 800 recharges, you can expect to retain 80-90% of their capacity!
MOTOR TYPE
HUB MOTOR – ideal for road use.
These motors are integrated into the front or rear wheel. They’re reliable, requiring minimal maintenance on geared types, while gearless versions can last indefinitely.
The positive aspect is that they don’t impose additional strain on your chain, gears, or crank.
However, they do add some weight that’s not centrally balanced.
MID DRIVE MOTOR – best for off-road use.
If you’re into off-road riding, the mid-drive motor is your best option. It places weight in the bike’s center for better balance and can generate high torque through gears, which assist in powering the chain.
SUSPENSION
Front Suspension – a must-have!
Given the weight of electric bikes, comfort is key. A front suspension enhances your daily commuting or delivery experience.
Rear Suspension – an advantageous option
While rear suspension isn’t common due to battery space constraints, it can add comfort, especially for off-road biking. Consider one with both front and rear suspension for rough terrains.
BRAKES
Hydraulic brakes are essential for safety and comfort on e-bikes, offering maximum stopping power and extended brake pad life.
Mechanical brakes can be a cost-effective choice if your rides are shorter, providing more stopping power than rim brakes but less than hydraulics.
Rim brakes are less effective, can be noisy in wet conditions, and are harder to adjust.
POST-PURCHASE SERVICE AND REPAIRS
Local shops are convenient, often featuring friendly staff and easier access.
Domestic shops might need some time for spare parts and repairs, but that’s expected.
Amazon or eBay often provide good return policies, but can take long for delivery. Generally, bikes on these sites are lower quality relative to their price.
A decent e-bike typically ranges from £800 to £2500. For casual use, the lower end is acceptable, but for delivery tasks, expect to invest over £1000. For instance, our rental bikes are priced around £2000.
USED ELECTRIC BICYCLES
A second-hand e-bike may seem appealing for budget-conscious riders… BUT if it’s priced too low, you should be cautious!
It may be stolen or have issues like an aging or damaged battery. The seller likely knows about existing problems but may present the bike as flawless.
If the battery is Chinese and over a year old, expect to replace it. For reputable brands like Samsung, LG, or Panasonic, up to 3-4 years is acceptable, depending on the motor’s power and maintenance history.
THINKING ABOUT RENTING AN E-BIKE?
This could be the best option if your budget is tight or if you’re a delivery rider. Typically, delivery riders need two substantial batteries, costing £1200+ without additional essentials for safety and convenience.
We offer both e-bikes for rent in London and e-bikes sales, so don’t hesitate to reach out!
