Robert Marchand dies aged 109

Robert Marchand, the French centenarian cyclist and the hour record holder for the 100+ and 105+ age groups, died on May 22, 2021, at the age of 109, at a care facility in Mitry-Mory, France.

Pinarello ESPADA (Indurain’s Hour Record breaking bike in 1994)

Designed and developed during the last millennium, Pinarello ESPADA was way ahead of its time. It was the bike that Miguel Indurain used while breaking the Hour Record. One of the most iconic bikes ever produced, it is also known as “Pinarello Sword” because espada means sword in English.

Graeme Obree, Athlete or Genius? (Short Film)

“Graeme Obree, Athlete or Genius?”, is a short film published by the Endura Official channel on YouTube. Endura is a cycling clothing company which was founded in Scotland in 1993. In this short film, they tested the positions invented by Graeme Obree, “The Flying Scotsman”. Using these positions (the “praying mantis” and the “Superman”), Obree broke the Hour Record twice (1993, 1994) and became the 4000 m pursuit World Champion, also twice (1993, 1995).

Aged 105, Robert Marchand sets a new hour record

This afternoon (on January 4, 2017) 105-year-old French cyclist Robert Marchand set the hour record for the category created especially for him by the UCI (105+). At the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome near Paris, managed to complete 22.547 kilometers in an hour! He fell just short of his 2014 record of 26.927 kilometers but what a phenomenal achievement!

A huge crowd cheered Marchand during his record-setting on trackside. He carried number 105 on his back.

I finished reading Michael Hutchinson’s “The Hour”, which gained him the award for “Best New Writer” at the 2007 “British Sports Book Awards”. The book mainly covers the first of his two (unsuccessful) hour record attempts.

Rohan Dennis breaks the Hour Record

BMC Racing Team’s Australian rider Rohan Dennis breaks the hour record with 52.491 kilometers (32.616 mi), beating Matthias Brändle’s record by over 600 meters, at the Velodrome Suisse in Grenchen, Switzerland.

Dennis used a 56×14 gear ratio while setting the new hour record. The previous record was 51.852 km (32.22 mi).

Eddy Merckx’s Hour Record – 1972 (video)

In 1972, On 25 October, Eddy Merckx set the Hour Record, after a great season: he started the year winning “la primavera”, Milan-San Remo, the first classic of the cycling season. He then won Liège-Bastogne-Liège, one of the five “monuments” (see notes 1), the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France (both general classification and points classification), and another monument, Giro di Lombardia (currently “Il Lombardia“) as well as many other races.

Then he attacked the Hour Record.

And the hour shuts up: Jens Voigt breaks the Hour Record

Jens Voigt breaks the Hour Record by 1,410 meters at the Vélodrome Suisse in Grenchen. The recently-retired German, who turned 43 on Wednesday, covered 51.110 kilometers (31.76 miles-205 laps) in one hour on 18 September 2014. The previous record was 49.700 km (30.88 miles) set by Ondřej Sosenka of the Czech Republic in 2005 in Moscow.

Voigt said after the record that: “51 kilometers in an hour, it’s a lot more than I had imagined. I gave it everything in the last 20 minutes. I knew that I still had the energy, that I was ahead of the mark. I felt euphoric – it was the last 20 minutes of my sporting career. I was super-motivated. Now I am on the list of all the famous names, I am so proud to join the likes of Merckx, Indurain. It’s fantastic to finish like this.”

Shut up Hour! Voigt’s hour record attempt bike

Trek has revealed the bike which Jens Voigt will use n his Hour Record attempt on September 18. The Trek Speed Concept 9 series bike has a Shimano Dura-Ace drivetrain and full disc wheels.

It is a modified version of Trek’s standard time trial machine, which Trek Factory Racing team using in the road races. The biggest modifications are – changes in the rear dropouts to accommodate track hub spacing of 120mm, and removal of the front and rear integrated brakes (they replaced with carbon filler to maintain the same surface geometry as the standard Speed Concept).

Jens Voigt will attack the Hour Record on September 18

Recently retired Jens Voigt will attack the Hour Record on September 18, announced the Trek Factory Racing team. He will attempt to break Ondřej Sosenka’s 49.7-kilometer mark, which was set in 2005. The attempt will happen in the Vélodrome Suisse in Grenchen.

The hour record for bicycles is the record for the longest distance cycled in one hour on a bicycle.
