Peter Sagan of Cannondale Pro Cycling Team (formerly Liquigas-Cannondale) has confirmed that Milan-San Remo, “The Primavera” will be the first goal of his 2013 season. The 22-year-old Slovakian won’t participate in Paris-Roubaix and the UCI Worlds in Florence.

Before heading to Los Angeles for the Cannondale Pro Cycling Team official presentation on January 13, he told La Gazzetta Dello Sport that he will ride the Tour de San Luis in Argentina between 21-27 January. He added: “After that, I’ll ride the Tour of Oman, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Gent-Wevelgem and the Amstel Gold Race.”

Joaquim Rodríguez wins Il Lombardia 2012 — Joaquim Rodríguez of Katusha Team won Il Lombardia 2012. It was an unlucky year for the Spaniard that full of near-misses (for example, Vuelta a España, where he was leading the race and looking really strong, but lost the race to Alberto Contador after a surprise solo attack by "El Pistolero" at the seventeenth stage). Rodríguez celebrated his victory (and breaking the bad luck of the 2012 season) by throwing his bottle in the air.

Joaquim Rodríguez of Katusha Team won Il Lombardia 2012, the 106th edition of the race, under heavy rain. He became the first Spaniard to win the Italian monumental classic. Samuel Sanchez of Euskaltel-Euskadi finished in second, while Rigoberto Uran of Team Sky finished in third.

Rik Van Looy — Henri ("Rik") Van Looy (born 20 December 1933 in Grobbendonk) is a Belgian former professional cyclist of the post-war period, nicknamed the King of the Classics or Emperor of Herentals (after the small Belgian town where he lived), and Rik II (Rik Van Steenbergen was the Rik I). He was twice world professional road race champion, and was the first cyclist to win all five 'Monuments': the most prestigious one-day classics – a feat since achieved by just two others (both also Belgians: Roger De Vlaeminck and Eddy Merckx). With 379 road victories he's second to Eddy Merckx only. He is ninth on the all-time list of Grand Tour stage winners with thirty-seven victories.

Early 20th journalists started creating nicknames for the cyclists. This effort popularized the cycling sport and make the racers interesting to the people who were not interested in cycling much.
