Santini bids farewell to plastic bags as it ushers in fully compostable, eco-friendly packaging for its technical cycling wear.

Santini has chosen new eco-friendly packaging for 2021: its technical cycling wear will be presented in wrappers made by TIPA, an international company that has set the benchmark in compostable packaging. This environmentally-friendly choice is part of a broader company strategy that spans everything from prioritizing Zero Miles suppliers to manufacturing using recycled fabrics.

From January 2021, Santini will be using TIPA’s compostable, eco-friendly packaging to wrap its technical cycling wear. This latest decision is part of a target environmental awareness strategy that has always been a powerful part of Santini’s corporate ethos. The company has consistently chosen fabric from suppliers in its local area, such as Sitip and Carvico, both based in Bergamo, and is committed to producing more of its output using recycled yarn.

The kits Santini supplies to the Trek-Segafredo men’s and women’s professional teams, the official Granfondo Stelvio Santini jersey, and some of its 2021 summer collections all feature fabrics made from recycled and recovered waste materials. Furthermore, from the 2021 UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships, World Champion jerseys for all disciplines will be made from recycled fabrics supplied by Polartec.

Completely compostable, eco-friendly packaging

“So this means that it won’t just be the cycling wear that is environmentally friendly but its packaging too” declared Paola Santini, marketing manager at Santini Cycling Wear. “Thanks to our agreement with TIPA, we will also using compostable packaging from January 2021. That is our commitment to becoming increasingly sustainable and lessening our environmental impact”.

TIPA is an international company that in 2010 developed a technology that allows it to make packaging that acts exactly like plastic but is actually fully compostable thanks to fully compostable polymers.

“TIPA’s packaging is a truly sustainable alternative to traditional single-use plastic packaging materials because it guarantees the same protection to its contents but completely biodegrades, returning to the earth as compost” commented Daphna Nissenbaum, CEO, and co-founder of TIPA.

TIPA’s packaging can be thrown in domestic composite bins – in the wet waste – and will then disintegrate within six months and fully biodegrade within a year.

About Santini Cycling Wear

Santini Cycling Wear was founded in 1965 by Pietro Santini who spotted a market for technical cycling clothing as a result of his abiding passion for the sport and competition. In what would seem like a revolutionary and contrarian choice today, the Bergamo-based company made the pivotal decision to design and manufacture all of its products exclusively in Italy. Each item is designed and developed by a designer team with deep-rooted passion for the two-wheel world to meet four key requirements: fit, performance, comfort and durability.

Santini currently produces 3,500 items of clothing per day and exports 80% of its output. It is deeply committed to ongoing investment in researching and developing innovative textiles and new production methods. However, people – athletes – remain its central focus as it continues to refine its creations to allow cyclists to pursue their sporting passions in a comfortable but inimitably stylish kit (www.santinicycling.com)
