Terpstra wins Paris-Roubaix 2014

Niki Terpstra (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) won the Paris-Roubaix 2014, the “queen of the classics” with a late attack on an elite group containing all the favorites in the last ten kilometer. John Degenkolb (Giant-Shimano) finished in second, big pre-race favorite Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing) finished in third.

Paris-Roubaix 2014, the 112th edition of the race saw a lot of attacks from the favorites. First, Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) attacked with 64.2 km to go and caught the breakaway group. Then Thor Hushovd (BMC Racing Team) accelerated and joined that group too. Boonen and Hushovd worked hard in the group, but the other members didn’t help and they were caught. With 38.5 km to go, Sep Vanmarcke (Belkin) attacked, Fabian Cancellara reacted and the duo started chasing the leaders. But they got caught.

With 21.4 km to go, Peter Sagan (Cannondale) attacked with Lars Boom (Belkin) on his wheel. The duo caught the leaders’ group. But shortly after that, the group containing Cancellara and Bradley Wiggins (Sky) has caught the leaders, “Gruppo compatto”.

With 6.2 km to go, Terpstra launched a powerful attack. No one responded, so it turned out a winning move. Terpstra soloed to the victory into Roubaix Velodrome. Degenkolb won the sprint for second place, and Cancellara completed the Paris-Roubaix 2014 podium.
